Institutional meeting with the equine industry to facilitate the temporary movement of competition equines between the countries of South America

On January 13 , the OIE Regional Representative for the Americas, Dr Luis Barcos and Dr Mauro Meske, Project Officer of the OIE Headquarters’ Status Department, met with Dr Göran Akerström, Director of Veterinary Affairs of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) at the FEI Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The reason for the meeting was the coordination of future joint activities between the OIE and the equine industry, for the facilitation of the temporary movement of equines of high health and high performance, focused on the harmonization of requirements and legislation between the different blocks of the Americas, as well as other actions for other regions.

Ms. Sabrina Ibañez, General Secretary of the FEI, participated in the meeting.

After two days of work, a specific project was drafted in a first instance, to harmonize the sanitary requirements for the temporary movement of competition equines between the countries of South America, taking into account also the sanitary requirements for temporary movement with the European Union and the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The harmonization of sanitary requirements will also include a joint work with the Customs of the region.
