OIE Reference Centers

An OIE reference center can be designated as:

“OIE Reference Laboratory” when its main mandate is to establish itself as a world reference center of expertise for a specific disease agent or disease
“OIE Collaborating Center” when its main mandate is to establish itself as a world reference center for research, standardization of techniques and dissemination of knowledge for a certain specialty

The network of Collaborating Centers and Reference Laboratories constitutes the core of the scientific expertise and excellence of the OIE. The permanent contribution of these institutions to the work of the OIE guarantees the scientific relevance of the standards, guidelines and recommendations developed by the Specialized Commissions and published by the organization.
Two or more reference centers can constitute a network of reference centers of the OIE, following the guidelines for the management of these networks.

The OIE has a procedure for the validation and certification of diagnostic tests, based on the periodic evaluations of the experts. Validated diagnostic tests are included in the records of the organization.

The OIE collects, develops and distributes specific technical information and recommendations for the use of veterinary services and technical experts on various topics related to animal health.
