Regional Seminar for OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories

The Regional Seminar for OIE National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories was held from 28 to 30 June in Buenos Aires, Argentina, thanks to the financial and logistical support of the Government of Argentina.

The meeting was attended by 56 participants, including the National Focal Points from 22 Member Countries (including the Delegate of Suriname in her role as the National Focal Point) as well as local participants, OIE Experts, speakers and OIE staff.

Newly appointed Focal Points had the chance to attend an electronic training prior to the Seminar, where they were introduced to basic information on the OIE objectives and missions, as well as their Terms of Reference as National Focal Points for Veterinary Laboratories.

Participants in the Seminar had the opportunity to discuss the laboratories’ role in Veterinary Services, specifically in outbreak investigation, risk analysis, disease surveillance and international trade, reviewing case studies and identifying the role of their national laboratory network as well as their current limitations and opportunities for improvement.

OIE capacity building activities were presented, including the OIE PVS Laboratory Missions as well as the OIE Laboratory Twinning Programme.

Participants had the opportunity to visit the Central Laboratory of the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (SENASA), which holds the position as OIE Reference Laboratory for several diseases.

Overall, participants were very engaged in the seminar and contributed to all aspects of its success.
